App Speaky Leggo Facile for dyslexia

Speaky Leggo Facile is an Italian Android App, a compensatory tool designed for dyslexia in order to ensure the student’s learning success. The application arises from the need to support pupils with the difficulty of decoding the text by converting the fonts of books into special typefaces and reading school texts “with the ears”, using the speech synthesis program.

What is Dyslexia

Main functions

Dyslexia is part of the Specific Learning Disorders (SLD) together with dysgraphia, anorthography and dyscalculia. As described in the guidelines of Law 170/10 which protects students with SLD, dyslexia results in “less correctness and reading speed than expected for age, class attended, education received”. The child or in general the student with dyslexia reads with more difficulty than other students, gets tired quickly, gets distracted, feels constantly in difficulty. Depending on the incidence of the disorder, difficulties in reading letters, words and entire passages may be noted. These disorders depend on the different modes of functioning of the neuronal networks involved in the processes of reading, writing and calculating. They are not caused by a cognitive deficit or by environmental or psychological problems. Dyslexia is a neurobiological condition: the dyslexic child has normal intelligence and cognitive abilities and the difficulty concerns only the learning process linked to reading.

Law no. 170 of October 8TH, 2010 “New rules on specific learning disorders in the school environment” protects the right to study of dyslexic children by highlighting the methodologies to be implemented to favor all students in order to give space to their true potential in based on their peculiarities. Compensatory tools are measures and tools that help pupils with SLD or other Special Needs to reduce the effects of the disorder by providing a learning method more suited to their characteristics, without making the task easier from a cognitive point of view.

Speaky Leggo Facile App was created with the aim of supporting students with DSA in their study, it is a PDF book reader capable of converting the book font into the OpenDyslexic font: a family of typefaces designed to mitigate some of the reading errors more common caused by dyslexia and improve the readability of texts. It allows both the display and reading of the original text and the display of the text extracted from the page with OpenDyslexic, as well as the reading of the original pdf and of the extracted text. Speaky Leggo Facile uses the voices installed on the device in the Italian, English, French, German and Spanish versions. In reading modes with OpenDyslexic and dual screen, the text is highlighted to facilitate learning and you can also adjust the speed of the voice and select the part of the page to listen to. Speaky Leggo Facile also automatically keeps track of the page you are reading so that it can return to the same page when you reopen the book. SPEAKY LEGGO FACILE can be used in 3 distinct modes: 1. viewing and reading of the original text 2. viewing and reading of the text extracted from the page and displayed with OpenDyslexic font 3. double screen with viewing and reading of the original pdf and of the extracted text.
